Delayed Gross Motor skills

Hypotonia (Low Muscle Tone)

Hypotonia (Low Muscle Tone)

As a child grows, gross motor skills of the arms, trunk and legs are developed as part of a child's motor learning. Between the ages of 0-5, a child learns to sit, crawl, jump, skip and hop.

Gross motor delay is an umbrella term for a child who may not be hitting these age-appropriate movements.

Physical therapy can help learn and develop these skills through exercise, activity and coordination training to allow for more participation with a child's peers.

Hypotonia (Low Muscle Tone)

Hypotonia  describes low tone. It may or not be related to other medical conditions, such as Down Syndrome or Cerebral Palsy.

Osgood Schlatter's

Hypotonia (Low Muscle Tone)

Osgood Schlatter's

Often appearing during adolescence or periods of growth, Osgood Schlatter's Disease is an injury to the knee due to overuse and/or stress. It can cause pain and/or swelling with activity.

Physical therapy may assist with stretching and strengthening, activity modification, and return to sport or activity training with improved symptom management.

Scoliosis

Sensory Processing, Bilateral Coordination and Integration

Osgood Schlatter's

Scoliosis is a rare condition when the spine abnormally twist or curves. Adolescents are more commonly affected.

Physical therapy may assist with stretching and strengthening, pre and post bracing interventions, and functional movements to reduce effects or impact from curvature.

Sensory Processing, Bilateral Coordination and Integration

Toe walking is when an individual primarily walks on their toes with decreased heel contact on the ground.

Prolonged toe walking can lead to tightness in heels and calves, ankle, knee and low back pain, or improper bone or joint development.

Physical therapy can improve efficiency and quality of gait through range of motion, strength, balance and flexibility.

Torticollis and Plagiocephaly

Torticollis and Plagiocephaly

Torticollis is a condition where often one side of the neck muscles are tight or contracted causing a rotation or tilt to one side.

Plagiocephaly is a term for flatness on the side of back of a child's head.

Following a thorough evaluation, physical therapy will provide education and interventions to improve and develop range of motion, strengthening, positioning and gross motor skills.
